We love lots of natural light in any room. But the fact is that most bathrooms don’t have windows at all. Creative bathroom lighting is important when remodeling.
Choose lighting fixtures that suit your style and provide efficient, attractive source of light.
SET THE TONE
Good lighting makes it attractive to freshen up with flattering lighting for make-up and getting ready for the day.
LIGHTING STYLE
Traditional look? Wall sconces are a good option.
Modern look? Try elongated glass bulb enclosures for a contemporary feel.
Classic? Over-the-mirror designs are still the most popular.
Ceiling lighting adds extra lighting to larger bathrooms but not necessary in standard main bathrooms.
LED LIGHTING
LED will be your light source. Light fixtures can have actual LED bulbs or a tiny LED Solid Circuit with no bulb. Both are fine. Incandescents and fluorescents are now banned so LED is it.
CHOOSING FIXTURES
Remember the store is a large well-lit place so judging light quality is hard there. Packages show lighting information to guide you.
Do a few in-store tests before you pull the trigger on any wall lighting choices.
Always choose “Soft Light” or “Warm” as these are in the warm spectrum similar to old style bulbs. Avoid stark and cold “Daylight” bulbs.
DIRECT VS INDIRECT LIGHTING
Reflected or indirect lighting can feel more friendly in bathrooms providing diffused and less-harsh light. For this choose fixtures that have a lens that bounces the light up or side-ways.
Task lighting for more focused lighting can be added with a separate convenient switch to use as needed.
PLACEMENTS FOR BATHROOM LIGHTING
For larger bathrooms ceiling lights can be added plus over-the-tub lights. Table lamps add ambiance.
PLACES TO SHOP
For budget-conscious projects try big box stores such as Home Depot, Rona and Lowes.
For boutique options try Cartwright Lighting, Carrington Lighting or Robinson Lighting. Huge selection and excellent sales help. Prices will be higher but if selection, quality and service is important it’s worth a try.
